Aboard the USS Juneau Captain Porter had assembled a small commando detail on a ship which he had commanded during the Second World War. The Juneau’s junior Marine officer, 2nd Lieutenant Richard M. Johnson, had a limited raiding experience as well. Together the two officers organized a raiding force with six other members of the ship’s party and mounted an attack upon a railroad tunnel and a section of track leading to it near Rashin.
