On 12 August 1950, as darkness fell, Task Element 95.1 steamed out of Sasebo, Japan, into a moonless night. They carried with them a list of targets on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula where access to train tracks, roads, tunnels, and bridges was reachable from the Sea. The target list had been drawn up by Commander Small, the Commanding Officer of Task Element 90.51, Lieutenant Commander Welch, and Major Dupras after a careful study of intelligence reports, aerial photographs, and Air Force and Marine Aerial reconnaissance flights. Once the officers of the SOG had crossed the 38th parallel into North Korea,
they had huddled in the ship’s wardroom and selected targets.
