Letter tanks and flamethrower tanks from the 1st Tank
Battalion had periodically traveled a road out in No
Man’s Land in front of Hill White and had received incoming
mortar rounds en route to designated raids and firing
positions. Cpl. Jerry Ravino recalls that the enemy walked
mortars up this road while the Marines transferred flame
tanks to be stationed at COP2 for 30-day periods. Direct
105mm rounds were fired at designated targets from the turret
on top of COP2. Reports of such activity were supplied
by Recon Company patrols, air observations, and the commanding
captain at COP2.
