On 6 October 1952 another reconnaissance patrol left“G’’ Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines led by
2nd Lt. James Lewis Day, the 3rd Reconnaissance Platoon
leader to follow a path heading towards Outpost Warsaw.
Included in this patrol were three Recon Marines whom
Day affectionately named the “Three Mice” because of their
small stature and uncanny ability to move about swiftly and
silently. The three mice were Pfc. Clyde J. Steel, Pfc.
George Nafesh, and Pfc. Wayne Mitchel. At approximately
1955, as the patrol moved in column file nearing the outpost,
the area was engulfed in a thundering of mortar and
artillery.
