Pfc. Andrew W. Pinsent and Pfc. Robert W. Starek with
1st Marine Division were the last two Marines off
Outpost East Berlin on 20 July. They came off seven hours
after the Chinese had swarmed down from a higher hill and
several hours after they had dived into a one-man foxhole
to hide from the Chinese Communists 15 feet away.
Pinsent relates: “We could hear the Chinese coming
through their own artillery yelling and screaming. There
weren’t many of us and there were too many of them. The
hole where we were hiding was pretty long, but not big
enough for a man to lie down in. We crouched back as far
as we could. The Chinese dropped a small satchel-sized
charge and two grenades into our hole, but they didn’t get
us.”
