Terms of the American Agreement required EUSAK components, including the 1st Marine Division, to carry out a number of tasks in the months following the end of active hostilities. UNC troops all along the front withdrew to a new main battle position (MBP) south of the
main line of resistance. A military demarcation line (MDL) was established between enemy and friendly positions. Each side pulled back 2,000 yards from this MDL, the combined 4,000-yard buffer strip creating what has become known the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
