As Sharon and his men prepared to remount their jeep, they noticed an enemy T-34 tank concealed within the brush on the right side of the road. Unknown to them at the time, they had already passed one camouflaged tank and were now looking at the second of four. The tanks had been concealed so well that even trained and wary eyes failed to see them sooner. From all appearances this vehicle was abandoned. The three men climbed aboard the tank’s exterior. Attempts to open the turret cover failed. As they labored with the cover, the periscope tube on the tank began to move.
